Weather

Weather – If you look at a map, you will see that the Yucatán peninsula shares the same latitude as the Arabian peninsula.  That is your first clue about the climate: In the summer time, it can be hot, with temperatures above the 100 F (38C) mark.  But this is only in the summer, and from December through April it is a wonderful place, with warm days and balmy tropical nights.

The winter, (December through April) is dry and cool.  Nighttime temperatures can drop to 55 F (12C), but the day-time temperatures average 72F (22C).  May, June, July and August are considerably warmer, the weather similar to Miami, with daytime temperatures in the 80-90F (27-33C) range.  In fact, in August it is so warm that yucatecos leave en mass for Progreso Port, 20 miles (29 kilometers) north of town.  Also remember that late summer through early fall (July – October) is the rainy season, and also the hurricane season.  The rainy season is characterized by sunny mornings, clouds forming around noon and tropical downpours between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., with the clouds breaking up by sunset.

These are the guidelines, but as your trip approaches, please click on the image to the left to see today’s weather in Mérida and the 10-day forecast.

Money & Exchange Rates

Currency & Exchange Rates – The Mexican peso is the legal tender in the Yucatán, although the U.S. dollar is widely accepted.

The symbol for the peso is $, and bill denominations come in $20, $50, $100, $200, $500 and $1,000 notes.  Images of the most widely-used bills are pictured on the left.  There are coins of $10, $5, $2 and $1 peso denominations, as well as for cents, or centavos: 50¢, 20¢, 10¢ and 5¢ are in circulation.

Please click on the image to the left to see the current inter-bank exchange rates, which will give you a good idea of the value of various currencies vis-à-vis the Mexican peso.

Remember that you can get the best exchange rate if you withdraw cash from an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) at a bank in Mérida, but check with your bank about fees.  Some U.S. banks will charge a $3.50 USD commission, regardless of whether you withdraw $20 USD or $500 USD!

U.S. Customs

U.S. Customs Information – U.S. Customs & Border Patrol publishes a pamphlet, KNOW BEFORE YOU GO, with current information about what you can and cannot bring with you when you return to the United States.  Please click on the image to the left to see the current "Know Before You Go" publication.
