Bicycling the Yucatan

The Yucatán peninsula is, almost in its entirety, a flat, sun drenched limestone shelf slightly above sea level.  It would be difficult to imagine a more amendable place for a long-distance bicycling.

Among the Maya, bicycles are a familiar and beloved form of transportation and, since the 1960s, bicycle tours across the Yucatán have grown in popularity.

From husband-and-wife enthusiasts who conduct small guided tours, to university students who cycle on mountain bikes – “off the beaten path” – to Tour Operators who conduct specific bicycle tours, there is something for everyone.

Only the Puuc Route has a few rolling hills, which might prove strenuous for some cyclists

Otherwise, this is an adventure that will take you to small villages, wonderful haciendas, spectacular Maya ceremonial center, and allow you the freedom explore cenotes, remote towns and villages, and best of all, befriend the Maya of the Yucatán.

When making your plans be mindful that the best times of year for bicycling are January through mid-April when the weather is hot, but comfortably dry.
