Day Trips

Since 1841 Mérida has been the gateway to extraordinary adventures.  John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood wrote books – Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas & Yucatan and Incidents of Travel in Yucatan – that have captivated the world’s imagination since the 1840s.  Since then people from around the world have ventured here, using Mérida as a base, a bastion of civilization, sophistication and comfort, from which to embark on once-in-a-lifetime adventures.

We live here, we work here, we know which extraordinary day trips can make this into a memorable holiday.  Of course there are the familiar trips – an overnight stay at Chichén Itza, or a night visit to the “Light & Sound” show at Uxmal.  But here we have compiled off-the-beaten-path adventures, suitable for everyone, that are singular.

Any of our members can direct you and make the arrangements for you, so go for it: Neither John Lloyd Stephens nor Indiana Jones have anything on you!

The Working Plantation (Hacienda) at Sotuta de Peón

Explore a working hacienda that takes you back to the 19th century, a time when the world had not yet industrialized and fantastic fortunes were made in agriculture.  This beautifully restored hacienda produces henequen (sisal), boasts a natural pool where visitors can swim, and includes a sumptuous lunch for visitors, who can tour the grounds on mule-drawn carts.

The Caves of Calcehtok

When will you have the opportunity to explore caves where the ancient Maya practiced religious ceremonies, remains littered with pre-Columbian pottery shards, and is a natural wonder – almost three miles of underground caverns?  And if you are there as dusk arrives, you will witness hundreds of thousands of bats emerge in a whirlwind as they set out to feed!
